*Why is Kirsti not afraid of the soldiers?

Kirsti is not afraid of the soldiers because she does not really understand that the Nazis are bad. And because the soldiers have always been there at that same spot so it is not anything different for her to see them there, the soldiers are like part of the landscape.
*How would you have felt if you had been Annemarie when the soldiers spoke to her? Why?

I would have felt scared because they could take me and bring me to a concentration camp if they were not in a good mood. But, once they said that I could go I would be very relieved that they didn't do something bad to me and just let me go.

Do you think King Christian did the right thing when he surrendered to the Nazis? Why?

Yes, because Denmark's army was very small and Germany had a huge army so if he didn't surrender then the Denmark army would be crushed.
Would you be willing to die to protect the leader of your country? Why?

Probably, because if they are the leader of a whole country then they must be very powerful and good.
What happened to Annemarie's older sister Lise?

Lise was hit by a car and died.
How has Annemarie's family changed after the death of Lise?

Annemarie's family changed after Lise's death by now the mom and dad are more careful about their kids and all of them are really happy that they are alive and safe.

Annemarie believes that ordinary people like her don't have to be courageous. Do you agree with this idea?

No, because I think everybody has to be courageous no matter how ordinary you are.

The Rosens are Jewish.

I think that later in the story the girls will get caught on the street running again by the same guards as the first time and be sent away.

The answer to the title of chapter one, "Why are you running?" is Ellen and Annemarie were running because they were racing down the street after school. The answer to the second chapter, "Who is the man who rides past?" is King Christian X rides past every day on his horse. The answer to the third chapter, "Where is Mrs. Hirsch?" is the Nazis closed their button store because the Hirschs are Jewish.
The title of this chapter is "It Will Be a Long Night." Why was it a long night?
It will be a long night because the Nazis might come to the Rosins apartment and try to take them away.
Why does Ellen spend the night with Annemarie?

Ellen spends the night with Annemarie because the Nazis knew where the Rosins live because they got a list of all the people that were Jewish. And the Nazis might come to their apartment and try to take them away.

Why do the soldiers come to the Johansen’s apartment?

The soldiers came to the Johansen's apartment because they were looking for the Rosins and they heard that the Johansens are the Rosins good friends so they thought that maybe the Johansens were hiding the Rosins in their apartment.

I think the soldiers expected to find the Rosins hiding in the Johansen's apartment.
Why does Annemarie tear the necklace from Ellen’s neck?
I think Annemarie tore the necklace off of Ellen's neck because it was a Jewish star on it and if the German soldiers saw that then they would know that she wasn't one of the Johansen's kids because they are not Jewish.
When Papa tore the pictures from his photo album, what was he trying to prove?
When Papa tore the pictures out of the photo album he was trying to make the guards believe him that Ellen was their kid and they had four kids.

Yes I do think Annemarie is brave because when the soldiers came to her apartment she didn't even seem scared at all.

The visit is different because, they are doing something secret and not just visiting Uncle Henrik.

I think mourners are people that are sad about something to them or one of their family members.
How does Uncle Hunrik explain to Annemarie why he and Mama lied to her about Great –aunt Birte?
He told Annemarie that they lied so then Annemarie would be braver if she didn't know everything.

Mama keeps the soldiers from opening the casket by telling them that if they open it then they might get typhus because Great-aunt-Brite still has germs on her.

Annemarie did not know the words to the psalm and she tried to forget the war that was going on with the Nazis and tries not to cry when Peter reads the psalm to all of the people.

What is in the casket?
A casket is a place where people put peoples bodies when they die.
Why did Peter insist upon giving the baby some medicine?
Peter insisted on giving the baby some medicine because he REALLY didn't want the baby to wake up and start crying and get them in trouble.
One possible theme for this novel is that it is easier for people to be brave if they do not know everything. Use an incident that happened in this novel to prove this.
Annemarie didn't know if Great-aunt Brite was real or not; and when she found out that she was fake then she got more scared of getting caught lying to the soldiers.
Find a section of this chapter that shows Annemarie no longer thinks of herself as the carefree child she once was.
Annemarie wanted super bad to know if Great-aunt Brite was real or not and if she was still a careless little girl then she wouldn't care is Great-aunt Brite was real or fake, just like Kristi.

Yes, I think she will meet soldiers but then find a way for them to let her go.
What observations about waiting does Annemarie make in this chapter?
She observes that waiting can be super super hard if you are waiting about something important or if somebody could be in trouble and you don't know if they are safe or not; that is when waiting is the hardest of all.
Why does Annemarie worry about her mother’s safety
Annemarie worries about her mothers safety because she thinks her mom might of been taken by the soldiers since she lied to them at Uncle Henrik's house, and maybe they found out and found her.

Annemarie volunteers to take the packet to Uncle Henrik because she knows that it is something very inportant and Mama can't do it with a broken leg.

In this chapter we see that Annemarie is confronted with reality and begins to less of a child. What is the reality she confronts?

I think that the soldiers treated her very mean, I'm not saying that they should have treated her nicely but they should have not treated her that mean especially when she started crying.

Three times the soldiers were mean to Annemarie were when she started crying, when the tore the bread in half and threw it on the ground, and when they just told her to be quite when she started crying.

Annemarie acted like Kristi because, Kristi would have acted silly and not serious or scared and Annemarie would have so she just acted like Kristi. Why does she do this?

Uncle Henrik defined brave to Annemarie as when Annemarie was on the path she risked her life and she wasn't thinking about being killed and that is all that bravery means to Uncle Henrik.

Uncle Henrik tells Annemarie that the Rosins were hiding below the deck on the boat being very quite so the soldiers couldn't hear them under there and know that they were trying to escape.

Something funny that happens in this chapter is when Annemarie tells Uncle Henrik that she milked Blossom then Uncle Henrik said Poor Blossom, I'm surprised she didn't kick you.

1. This chapter takes place two years later after the war. How do the Danish people include their Jewish neighbors in the celebration?

Danish people include Jewish people in their celebration by putting a candle in every window where Jewish people lived that died. THey put a flag in their windows and cleaned their candlesticks.
2. How did Peter die? How did Lise really die?
Peter dies because he got caught by the Nazis and killed for helping the Jewish people escape. Lise really died because she was hit by a Nazi truck on purpose.

Annemarie hides Ellen's star of david necklace in one of Lises old dresses.

Three events that really did happen from this story are that Denmark surrendered to Germany in 1940, that the Danes sank their own entire navy in Copenhagen harbor as the Nazis approached to take over the ships for their own use, and that King Christian rode alone from the palace every morning unguarded, and greeted his people. Most of the rest of history was made of by the author, Lois Lowry when she was writing this book.
